Our Story

Aydé Manzano de York

Founder

I was born in Mexico city. I came to Oregon as an exchange student who wanted to learn English. I fell in love and married an Oregonian in 1970.é

I created Amiguitos! Preschool in the year 2000 with one goal in mind: to provide my grandchildren with the opportunity to be immersed in the Spanish language and culture. Since then many families have joined our program to give their children the same gift I gave my grandchildren. It has been very rewarding to help children discover the joy of bilingualism. I look forward to serving your family.

Degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts Foreign Languages: Spanish (with Honors)

  • Certificate in ESL (Teacher of English as a Second Language)

  • Master of Education

Aydé decided to sell their school in the end of 2022. Futian International School took over the school in March, 2023. We would like to assure you that we will continue to run the school as it has been running with the only exception that we will offer camps during July and August. In July, we will have Spanish Immersion camps and we also own a program named Engineering for Kids in Portland so we may offer Engineering based summer camps as well.

Futian Education LLC

Owner

Futian International School is owned by 3 Moms: Emily, Xiaojie and Helen.

Emily, Xiaojie and Helen also own and run another two schools named Bamboo International School and Xstream Learning Center at 3 locations. Both schools are providing bilingual STEM programs. We value children as the center to their own learning, not simply an empty vessel waiting to be filled with knowledge. We believe that children are able to pursue their own interests and revisit and build upon ideas at their own pace. When we heard about Amiguitos Westside being for sale, we toured the school and immediately fell in love with the place. When we had our first meeting with Ayde, we were excited to find out that we had so much in common in the background and the reason why we started schools and could not stop chatting about children and how we can best care for them.

Emily - As busy parents with challenging work schedules, Emily and her husband found it extremely difficult to find an ideal daycare that could meet their expectations and balance their life/work schedules. Knowing the importance of early childhood education and the struggles of working moms to balance their work and family, Emily came up with the idea to start a bilingual child center which would help working moms in our community, taking care of their young children and providing quality early childhood education, so they can endeavor for their career without concerns. In 2015, Emily left her position of supply chain Director and founded Bamboo International School. In 2017, she started up Xstream Learning Center and in 2021 Bamboo International School Bethany location was opened. Emily received her bachelor’s degree in business management from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, and her master degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a certificate in early childhood education from Portland State University. She has continued enriching herself afterwards in the field of K-12 education, children psychology, teacher training, school administration, finance and staff management, etc. and established herself as an expert in cross-cultural communication, international education and STEM education. She is currently in the process of pursuing her Doctor's degree in Education.

Xiaojie - After graduating from Beijing Normal University, Xiaojie gained her Master degree in Education from Germany. She has 8 years experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language. She is a mother of 2 bilingual girls. As an advocator of psychoanalysis and individual psychology, she devoted herself to early childhood education. In 2019, Xiaojie joined Bamboo International School and was in charge of curriculum design. She became the Director of Bamboo School's Bethany location from May 2021.

Helen - She graduated from Nanjing Normal University in China and received her master degree in Marketing in University of Melbourne. She joined Emily when she started to open up a new school - Xstream Learning Center in 2017 and became the Director of the school in the following year. Her passion in early childhood education and her background in marketing enrich her with a deep insight into the needs of parents and the advancement of the industry, which become a valuable asset to the school.

About Us

We opened our doors in 2000 with the goal of providing children 100% total Spanish immersion.

We have an Eastside and Westside location to serve the Portland metro area. We first opened our Milwaukie location in 2000 and in 2011 we opened our second school on the Westside in the Cedar Hills area in Portland.

Mission Statement

The purpose of Amiguitos Preschool is to provide a safe, comfortable and loving environment rich in the Spanish language, spoken by qualified native speakers to enhance the cognitive, social and emotional development of our students.

Our Philosophy

Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner has spent many years analyzing the human brain function and its impact on education, including language learning. He says that there are several types of intelligence and these "Multiple Intelligences" can be linked to teaching a second language. Based on Gardner's principles, Amiguitos! believes that:

  • Children learn by doing

  • Language sounds should be reinforced by pictures & real objects

  • Learning should be fun

  • Children learn best when they are relaxed and comfortable

  • Dancing & moving to rhythm is important when learning a second language

  • Children learn through touching, tasting, hearing & smelling

  • Some children learn by reflecting

We believe in an integrated program that involves your children, the parents and our staff. Our philosophy incorporates open communication between staff and parents in a safe and stimulating environment that enriches the children through these important first years.

Our Staff

We have a dedicated native Spanish speaking staff that cares about not only how your child learns Spanish but about the well being of your child.
